Most Costco warehouses will be closed on Labor Day, September 2, 2024, according to the company’s standard holiday schedule. The closure affects the majority of Costco locations across the United States, but some exceptions may exist depending on local laws or store-specific decisions.
Costco, the wholesale retail giant, generally observes federal holidays by closing its stores nationwide. According to company policies and confirmed reports from multiple store locations, most warehouses will be closed on Labor Day. This includes no regular store hours, with the exception of some stores in states where holiday laws permit or require different operating hours. Customers are advised to plan their shopping accordingly and check with their local Costco store for specific hours or any special notices.
While most stores will be closed, Costco’s online shopping platform remains accessible, allowing customers to order items for delivery or pickup where available. The company’s website and customer service channels confirm that physical store closures are standard for holidays like Labor Day, which is recognized as a federal holiday in the United States.
Why Costco’s Labor Day Closure Matters for Shoppers
Understanding whether Costco is open on Labor Day helps consumers plan their shopping trips around the holiday schedule, avoiding inconvenience. For many, Costco is a primary source for bulk groceries, household items, and electronics, making holiday closures potentially disruptive if unanticipated. Additionally, the closure reflects broader retail industry practices, as many retailers choose to close or reduce hours on major holidays, affecting shopping habits and supply chain logistics.
For Costco members, knowing the store’s holiday hours can influence decisions about stockpiling essentials or scheduling last-minute purchases. It also underscores the importance of checking local store hours, as some locations may have variations based on state laws or local policies. Overall, this information helps consumers avoid unnecessary trips and plan accordingly, especially during a busy shopping season that includes back-to-school and holiday preparations.

Costco’s Holiday Operating Schedule and Past Practices
Costco has historically closed most of its stores on major federal holidays, including New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. This policy aligns with the company’s emphasis on employee well-being and standard retail practices. While online shopping remains available, physical stores typically do not operate on these days. The trend reflects a broader industry pattern where large retailers close or operate with reduced hours during holidays to give staff a break and observe national customs.
In recent years, some stores in specific states or regions have occasionally opened on certain holidays, but these are exceptions rather than the rule. The current trend signals that most Costco warehouses will follow the established pattern of closure on Labor Day, with confirmed reports from store managers and regional offices supporting this. The spike in searches about holiday hours, including related queries about Walmart, Target, and Trader Joe’s, indicates growing public interest in holiday store schedules, driven by plans for last-minute shopping or avoiding closures.
